Helping heal our community

Thanks to everyone who has purchased art from me over the past month or so in the knowledge that money was being donated to help Sonoma county fire relief efforts. You all know who you are. Thank YOU! I thought I'd just check in to let you know how 'we' are doing so far.

In the spirit of full transparency and accountability, my art sales have generated $1891 for fire relief so far ....and this is not including any online or in person orders for Fountaingrove Round Barn prints, but know that my intention is to donate the proceeds to RCU North Bay Fire Relief Fund.

$1126 to Redwood Credit Union North Bay Fire Relief Fund - from sales during Sonoma County Art Trails Open Studios
$350 to Sebastopol Center for the Arts - Art Trails Artist Relief Fund
$415 to 'Go fund a Hero' for the firefighters who lost their own homes (Peacetown benefit at Sebastopol Community and Cultural Center).
(NOTE: To customers who have ordered Round Barn prints - they are in stock now  - I will be contacting you to complete your orders. Thanks in advance!).
With graditude
Carolyn

INFERNO: So sad.....Fountaingrove Round Barn, Santa Rosa, California - razed to the ground during the devastating wine country wildfires of October 9 2017. Gone but not forgotten...

Recipe:
Take one real grape leaf.
Cover leaf with liquid latex and press leaf onto watercolor paper. Press down to 'print' the leaf.
Let dry.
Remove leaf.
Paint with watercolor - the latex will preserve the veins and leaf shape.
Remove latex.
Collage with rice paper.
Have fun adding color with watercolor, acrylic inks, water soluble crayons - designing a colorful background.
Voila!

Full of personal history and layers of meaning, British expatriate Carolyn Wilson's new series of collage pieces capture aspects of her experience living and traveling in England. She says, "Communicating more than what is merely visible on the surface, my latest collage work incorporates ephemera, such as maps, printed words and postage stamps. The work is embedded with fragments of my life story - pieces of me. The mementos might end up being only partially visible beneath layers of paper, or completely hidden, but their inclusion is important to my creative process and the evolution of a piece. The viewer needs to take a close look to discover them."

Carolyn's collage work has a tactile, fabric like quality, and contemporary style framing of paintings on canvas or wood panels eliminates the need for glass, allowing viewers to enjoy and even touch the rich surface textures. Many of Carolyn's new works are small in size, although equally as creative and detailed as her larger paintings.  She uses a variety of aqua media, (meaning anything dissolved with water) such as watercolor, acrylic, inks and gesso in combination with collage elements of found or hand colored rice papers.

Dates:
- Join artists, Carolyn Wilson and Cynthia Jackson-Hein, for  English style tea and biscuits (cookies)...and more on Saturday July 8th 5-8pm.
- In addition, Carolyn will be in the gallery on  Saturday, July 8th 11-8pm and Friday, July 14th 11-8pm, or by appointment.
- Carolyn's art will be featured in the gallery from July 3 - July 30 2017

Demo: Drop in to watch her working in the gallery on a collage piece - Saturday, July 15th 1-3pm

Royal Mail

In England, outgoing letters do not get collected from your home, as they do here in the States. You have to drop them in the mail, so these pillar boxes are a very familiar sight on street corners throughout the UK. The cast iron post box depicted here is one of the earliest around - dating from the reign of Queen Victoria, as designated by the VR monogram.
The Royal Mail began in the 16th century with letters being carried by stagecoach, but the world's first postage stamp, the Penny Black, wasn't invented till 1840.
I have been saving stamps from personal letters and postcards for decades. My attraction is partly connected to travel, and the countries and cultures they represent, but they are also beautiful miniature pieces of art in their own right. If you look closely this painting, there are stamps, British maps and other treasures hidden into the collage.
Who doesn't love to receive a handwritten card or letter complete with a real stamp or two to seal the deal?
